Women in Motorcycling
Recognizing that women are the fastest growing segment within the motorcycle industry, more and more retailers are beginning to focus on women as a viable customer. In the U.S. alone, there are over 600,000 women motorcyclists who are drawn to bike riding because of the freedom, camaraderie, and adventure according to a survey completed by Harley-Davidson. Women make up about 11% of sales for Harley-Davidson and other motorcycle manufacturers report similar statistics. To continue to attract the women motorcycle rider, manufacturers are making bikes just for women and women motorcycle clubs are being formed around the country. The AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) formed the International Women & Motorcycling Conference in 1999 and continues to draw hundreds of attendees from over 40 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, England, and Ireland. Open Road Radio has been invited to the conference three years of the event and provided a live broadcast from each event with the then President of the AMA – Rob Raiser
Women riders boast an annual household income of $47,300 compared to men’s household income of $43,800. Fifty-six percent of female riders, versus 42% of male riders, have a college education. Most female riders begin riding in their mid-thirties and nearly 37% buy a brand new motorcycle when beginning.
